Drones make appearance at "history breaking" Super-Bowl 51

Monday, February 6, 2017 - 12:30

The FAA approved for hundreds of drones to be part of Lady Gaga's half time show performance at this years Super Bowl, a history making battle between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons.

The drones ducked and dived around the Houston skyline, transforming from stars to a flag.300 of the flying machines all travel'ed across the sky in sync and were Intel's Shooting Star Drone Squad.

Operating multiple drones at once requires a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration under Part 107. The FAA put a temporarily flight restriction within a 34.5-mile radius of NRG Stadium in downtown Houston, Texas on game day. The restrictions were effect from 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5.

Drones are becoming increasingly common as night-time entertainment. Intel partnered with Disney in 2016 to fly 300 drones in the air over Walt Disney World in a holiday show that visitors called ‘better than fireworks.‘

In 2013, Lady Gaga wore a dress that looked like a giant drone and even flew a few feet, so she is no stranger to the flying robots.
