UAVs are increasingly being used in emergency response as they are able to reach territories that ordinarily wouldn’t be accessible and encounter hazardous environments. There are a number of applications that UAVs are being used for, such as:
Delivering aid, medicine and supplies. This has already been done successfully in Haiti
Delivering defribrelators to people suffering cardiac arrest, allowing people to be reached far quicker than a paramedic, and resultantly dramatically increasing the chances of survival
To locate individuals that may be injured that you wouldn’t ordinarily be able to locate by foot. Infrared and thermal cameras can be used to find individuals that may otherwise be impossible to find with night goggles and helicopters. Using UAVs rather than helicopters is particularly appropriate as helicopters can often drown out the sound of people screaming for help
UAVs can also be used to assist emergency crew on the ground, but determining what the quickest route may be or enabling them to avoid roads that are blocked off.
