Aeryon UAV used to create 3D model of Christ the Redeemer

The project's mission was to create the first accurate 3D model of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. Aeryon Labs used their Scout UAV with a customized imaging payload. The project also involved Pix4D and PUC University of Rio de Janeiro.

It took 19 separate flights over 6 days in late October last year to acquire the images. The customized Scout captured a total of 3,584 images of which 2,090 were loaded into Pix4Dmapper pro software to create the 3D model.

The recent events in Paris where Al Jazeera journalists were arrested and charged with flying drones without licenses has brought the negative impact of UAVs back into mainstream media. These incidents while isolated can be damaging to the UAV industry. Therefore it's great to see companies like Aeryon working on these types of projects to highlight not only the positive impact that UAVs can have, but also how new technology can be utilized.

There is a short video provided by Pix4D on the project itself which can be viewed on YouTube below.

We look forward to seeing more innovative projects like this, have a great weekend from all at Team UAV Protect!
